Maryland Transportation Authority

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) has completed the replacement of the bridges that carry Cowenton Avenue and Joppa Road over I-95. The new bridges are longer and allow for the addition of Express Toll Lanes (ETLs^SM) along mainline I-95. They were built wider to improve safetly and accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists. The new Joppa Road Bridge was constructed in the same location as the original bridge. The new Cowenton Avenue Bridge was built just north of the original bridge.

About Construction

Construction of the two bridges began in spring 2006 and was completed in fall 2007.

The new Cowenton Avenue/Joppa Road Bridges received the Mid-Atlantic Construction Magazine's "Best of 2007" Bridge Award of Merit.

Bridge Highlights

• Two lanes, which is the same configuration as the previous bridge;
• Five-foot sidewalks and wider shoulders for bike paths; and
• A length of 302 feet, which is 78 feet longer than the previous bridge.

The new Joppa Road Bridge features:

• Two lanes, which is the same configuration as the previous bridge;
• Five-foot sidewalks and wider shoulders for bike paths; and
• A length of 298 feet, which is 56 feet longer than the previous bridge.
